The first draft of my third book in the World War Two series of standalone stories set in Poole, Dorset, is now complete and with my publisher for editing. Whenever I finish a first draft it brings a wonderful sense of accomplishment. I enjoyed writing this story immensely, particularly as I was able to tie up a couple of loose ends from The Last Boat Home.
This third book is mainly set in Paris and Normandy, and follows the story of the mother of little Antoine Dubois who many of you read about in The Last Boat Home. I wanted to write about the persecution of Jewish people, and the incredibly courageous work of some otherwise 'ordinary' men and women who fought for the resistance in France just like this beautiful and brave girl in the image below.
I also chose to highlight the history of Sainte-Mère-Église, the first town in France to be liberated after the D-Day landings. There was a paratrooper whose parachute was caught on the church steeple and he hung there for hours, acting dead, until he could get down.
And, of course, Poole plays a role and my modern-day character is intricately involved with the family in a farmhouse in Sainte-Mère-Église, where she had stayed as a young schoolgirl on a French exchange holiday, and where she experienced her first ever delicious kiss with a gorgeous French boy. When she meets him again thirteen years later, neither of them have forgotten that steamy moment ...
